Chuck McDaniel Managing Principal

Resort planning and design (particularly for small, one-of-a-kind resorts); hospitals, office developments, and mixed-use developments; small site planning; working with water; swimming pool design (his pool at Las Ventanas remains one of the most photographed in the world).

Over the past 33 years with SWA, Chuck’s professional focus has ranged from large master-planned residential projects and office building landscape architectural design to resort planning and design. Chuck was the lead designer and Principal in charge of Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Cabo San Lucas, Latin America’s top resort since its opening in 1996. He currently has resorts under design or operating in Mexico, Bermuda, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Georgia, Florida, Arizona, Kansas, and Washington State. “I like to resolve complex spaces—the remnants of the site planning and architectural design processes,” he explains. “Creating usable, interesting, highly articulated space where there was previously none excites me.”

Design philosophy

“Explore ideas, and remember: ‘a good idea is where you find it.’ Be open to the influences and creativity of the people and places around you. Deliver more than expected. Face issues and fix them. Have a little fun.”
